Diamond production began in Canada in the early 1990s and has since developed rapidly. Today the country is ranked among the top three diamond producers in the world in terms of value.

The first discovery of diamonds was in 1991 at Lake Point in the Northwest Territories. Since then, the Ekati and Diavik mines have also been opened.

According to statistics, between 1998 and 2002, 13.8 million carats of diamonds were mined in Canada, worth $ 2.8 billion.

Diamond mining is a very expensive activity, especially in the north where the winters create harsh and trying environment. However, the high quality of Canadian diamonds ensures the profitability of the mines.
